Frequently Asked Questions
This litter is primarily made from soybean fiber, a byproduct of the soy industry. When soybeans are processed into food products such as tofu and soy milk, the fibrous material is filtered out and repurposed into absorbent cat litter!
Our litter is free from chemicals, clays, perfumes, silica, and other harmful ingredients. Being made from natural materials, it can be disposed of by flushing or composting, provided local regulations permit.
It has a neutral scent, with just a hint of earthiness, and contains no added fragrance, which means that Purr-fect Cat Litter is free of perfumes!
Purr-fect Cat Litter is suitable for kittens that are at least eight weeks old. Most vets recommend avoiding litter use for kittens younger than this age.
Keep an eye on your kitten to ensure they’re not eating the litter. If you notice they’ve consumed a noticeable amount, discontinue use right away and reach out to your vet for guidance.
So far, we haven't received any reports of such concerns from our early reviews. While soy in food or treats may carry a different allergy risk, if your cat shows any signs of a reaction, we advise stopping the use of Purr-fect Cat Litter and contacting your vet as a precaution.
Our litter is free from tree nuts and sesame, but we cannot completely rule out the possibility of trace contamination since our production facility is not certified as nut- or sesame-free. Furthermore, we can't guarantee that our raw material suppliers don’t handle allergens in their facilities or storage areas.
Yes! Purr-fect Cat Litter is flushable, but it’s important to follow our recommendations.
First, verify your local and state regulations, as some regions restrict flushing cat waste due to concerns about pathogens contaminating water or soil. If allowed, you can flush the litter in a well-maintained septic system.
Make sure to break larger clumps into smaller pieces, no bigger than the size of a billiard ball. Flush only one or two small clumps at a time, and avoid flushing large amounts all at once.
This litter is not suitable for low-flow toilets or sump pumps that push waste uphill. Friends and Fur is not liable for any damages caused by improper use of the product.
Yes, it can!
However, not all cities permit composting of litter due to concerns about potential pathogens that could contaminate water or soil. Therefore, we recommend checking with your local and state regulations to confirm whether animal litter is accepted in your compost bin.
The product has a shelf life of 24 months from the production date if kept unopened (refer to the bag for specifics).
For optimal results, use it as soon as you can after opening. Once opened, make sure to seal the bag tightly and store it in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place to keep it performing at its best.
Regular scooping should prevent mould, but any plant-based litter can develop mould if not scooped frequently or if stored in a damp environment. In hot and humid climates, or for cats with health issues causing frequent urination, you might need to replace the litter more frequently.
- When transitioning to Purr-fect Cat Litter, begin with a mix of 50% Purr-fect Cat Litter and 50% of the current litter.
- Gradually increase to 75% Purr-fect Cat Litter and 25% of the previous litter in subsequent changes.
- Continue increasing the amount of Purr-fect Cat Litter until the transition is completed and the previous litter is fully phased out.
Cats can be very particular about their litter preferences, especially its texture. It’s important to introduce our litter gradually into your cat's current litter. However, if the issue isn’t the texture, it could also be the scent or appearance.
Here are a few tips:
- Blend Gradually: Mix a 50:50 ratio of the new litter with the old. If it’s a texture issue, slowly increase the amount of new litter over a few weeks, adjusting based on your cat’s comfort level.
- Use Familiar Scents: Place a small scoop of your cat's used litter in the box to make it feel more familiar.
- Add Catnip: Rub or spray catnip on the entrance and back edge of the box to make it more appealing and help your cat feel at ease.
- Positive Reinforcement: Offer praise and encouragement when your cat interacts with the new litter, even if it’s just sniffing the box.
- Treats for Success: Give treats when your cat uses the litter box correctly, but only if your cat is not already at its ideal weight to avoid overfeeding.
- Check the Location: Ensure the litter box’s location is suitable and see if any recent changes might be affecting your cat's routine.
Hopefully, with some time and patience, your cat will come around!
The frequency of changing your cat’s litter can vary based on several factors, such as the number of cats, the size and quantity of litter boxes, and how frequently your cats use them. We suggest replacing the litter entirely every 15-20 days.
Given that a cat’s sense of smell is significantly more acute than ours, it's advisable to clean the litter box thoroughly before adding fresh litter. Dispose of the used litter in the trash or compost (if your area permits).
For daily maintenance, scoop the litter at least once and ensure the depth remains at least 2 inches by topping it up as needed. You can dispose of clumped litter by flushing (1-2 small clumps at a time), composting, or throwing it away in your trash bin, if permissible in your area.
Although this litter is made from natural ingredients, it is not meant for consumption by animals or humans. If a child ingests any amount, contact the Poison Center at 0800-764-766. If your cat consumes a significant quantity of litter, discontinue use immediately and consult your veterinarian.
Sometimes, eating non-food items can indicate a nutritional deficiency. Monitor your cat’s behavior, and if they start consuming other materials, consult your vet to check for any macronutrient imbalances.
If your cat is eating the litter, avoid scolding them, as it may cause them to avoid the litter box. Instead, redirect their attention and follow the recommended transition steps to help them adjust.
The smell of ammonia can be influenced by various factors, including your cat's gender, whether they’re neutered, their diet, bathroom habits, and environmental conditions like the litter box size, litter depth, number of cats, heat, humidity, and your scooping routine. Because of these variables, there's no universal answer to your question.
Purr-fect Cat Litter includes activated charcoal to neutralise odours and form clumps for easy removal of soiled litter. If multiple cats are using the same litter box, you might need to scoop more often or increase the litter depth to manage odours effectively.
Ensuring the safety of your cat and the environment is our top priority! We suggest checking local regulations before flushing the litter. Indoor cats are generally not at risk for toxoplasmosis, as it is typically transmitted through eating rodents or birds. However, if your cat is on a raw food diet (which could also be a source of infection), we recommend avoiding flushing the litter.
Purr-fect Cat Litter is designed to break down completely in water, which is gentle on pipes and sewage systems. Made mainly from recycled soybean fiber, it is free from chemicals, clay, fragrances, and silica, making it an eco-friendly choice. Additionally, because it’s composed of natural ingredients, it is also suitable for composting if you prefer that disposal method.
Purr-fect Cat Litter works with some litter robots, but not all. Its compatibility depends on the size and design of the sifting grate in the particular model you have.
